sustainable: to endure without giving way

contemporary: of the present time

organic: formed from living things

Stranger Furniture is a design-build studio producing modern, organic furniture from sustainable materials.

Our primary source of material is local urban salvage. Trees that are blown over or cut down due to disease or construction are milled on site or at the arborist's yard. This process allows us to use unique wood that would otherwise be wasted and keeps trees out of the landfill. Other materials include F.S.C. certified lumber, reclaimed wood from demolished buildings and construction sites and alternative sheet products like Kirei (from sorghum waste) and Bamboo. Our primary finish is Tried and True linseed oil. This is a zero VOC, pure plant derived finish with no thinners or driers.

Each piece of Stranger Furniture is a unique object. The wood is carefully chosen and worked with the individual nature of the material in mind. This attention to detail and form eliminates the boundary between art and design. We make furniture in small batches using as much handwork as possible. In this way we ensure not only the quality and durability of the work but also the high material yield. These pieces will last for generations.

In 2005 William Stranger's Monolith Bench won best design at Good Wood: Furniture and Objects from Sustainable Materials at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA).

In 2007 the new Light (gets in) line was shown at HauteGREEN, a curated exhibition of sustainable furniture in the New York City design week.
Upcoming shows include Caboom V, Santa Monica (in the EpoxyGreen booth); Dwell on Design, in June at the LA Convention Center; Installation at the PMCA spring 2009.
