A second growth forest is one that has re-grown after it has been heavily
logged or clear-cut. This exhibition of salvaged wood furniture and objects
encourages a closer look at the nature of our relationship with the natural
world and promotes the idea of a culture in balance with it’s environment.
The installation of salvaged materials, finely crafted furniture and hand
carved objects suggests the life cycle of a tree. Growth is followed by death,
then decay. Decay nourishes new growth. Waste becomes the raw material for
innovative design. The exhibition includes several pieces from the Light (gets
in) series. These tables and chairs are made of locally salvaged wood from
Los Angeles area trees that have fallen over or been cut down due to construction
or disease. It also features the installation of a recently salvaged log from
Arcadia that has been milled and stacked “en boule” to recreate
the tree trunk from which it came.
Construction waste counts for the bulk of clogged landfills; dense old growth beams from demolished houses are usually discarded. The exhibition includes a bench fabricated from a large beam left as close to its original dimension as possible to reference the size of the massive tree from which it was cut. Sections of reclaimed bowling alley lanes are installed in the museum as well as a table made from this material.
With the goal of creating zero waste, much of the scrap generated in the Stranger studio is saved for future use. Drawing on inspiration from the nature of this material, the new Fragments series of wall-mounted pieces made of waste products are on display.
